A MESSAGE FROM KHADIJA

When the news of Shukri’s torture and killing reached me, I was completely numb for about an hour. How could I fight against the will of God? He sent Shukri and me to Mosul to bring the fragrance of Christ to this dark and evil city. As we had prayed, we reasoned that we would be martyred for our glorious Lord someday, and it would be an honor. But now that Shukri was really gone, it did not feel so honorable.

I share these words several months after I lost my beloved Shukri. I am not sure I would have been able to compose myself and voice my feelings before now. I ache for him. It’s hard to put into words how much I miss my husband. He loved me with the love of Christ. And little Sarah and Walid were lost without their loving abu! But the Lord’s grace is rebuilding their shattered hearts.

Yet, you must know this: We are not leaving. God put us in Iraq, and here is where we will stay. Perhaps you, too, have been called to persist at something God has called you to. I am convinced it is our duty as servants of the Most High to stay, go, or continue doing whatever He says until He tells us otherwise.

I also want you to know that the two couples who came to our home after Shukri’s first Friday at the mosque became followers of Jesus. The day they believed, we taught them how to share their faith, and now there are twenty-three of us that worship Jesus in the middle of the night. Dangerous? Yes. But many more are interested in knowing our wonderful Savior. They are desperately afraid of ISIS and need the hope the gospel gives them. By staying in Iraq, we show that Jesus is our Protector and that we do not fear the sinister works of men.

ISIS is the most vicious terrorist group, perhaps ever, and we relocated to Erbil. ISIS gave us choices: convert to Islam, pay the jizya tax, leave, or die. I was ready to go see my Jesus and to see Shukri again, but I thought of the children. So we moved on. The presence of Christ is still needed in Mosul, and, I tell you, we Christians will be back someday.

Shukri was an earthly treasure I will also have in heaven. Meanwhile, there are many things I miss about him. His passion for God comes to mind first. After that . . . well, I loved his jokes! He could make the tension leave any situation by his always-present sense of humor. And I suppose I will miss his continual smile.

The hardest thing to talk about, though, is how cruelly ISIS tortured Shukri before he died. They slashed him with knives all over his body before shooting him at least ten times in the head and chest. They dragged him off and buried him in a patch of sand.
